In 2002, the first demo sequence of ‘Madvillainy’leaked online. The tracks contained early vocal cutsfrom MF DOOM, recorded and quickly mixed in LosAngeles at Madlib’s Bomb Shelter studio. The demosmay have been unfinished but fans could alreadyunderstand that this was a hip-hop album unlike anyother.
DOOM rerecorded vocals - alluding to the leak on‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ - and Madlib added new beatsand changed up the sequence. Leaks could kill analbum’s momentum in the early 2000s but the demosonly whetted fans’ appetites; when Madvillainy cameout in 2004 it was “one of the most anticipatedreleases in underground rap history,” according toPitchfork.
Available on vinyl for the first time, the ‘MadvillainyDemos’ are early versions of what is widely consideredto be one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. Vinyl jacket and insert include newly released archivalphotos by Eric Coleman (who photographed theoriginal ‘Madvillainy’ cover).
Mastered by Dave Cooley, who mastered ‘Madvillainy’.
